Using Real-Time Spectral Analysis to Visualize, Measure, and Troubleshoot EMI Signals in a Completely Different Way
By Lee Hill, Founding Partner, SILENT Solutions, LLC

You can’t find or fix what you can’t see! Troubleshooting and localizing intermittent signals or multiple layers of broadband and narrowband signals can be frustrating even for the most seasoned EMC troubleshooter or RF engineer. In this presentation Lee will discuss the capabilities of different types of spectral analysis technologies, and then demonstrate how real-time analysis can literally make previously-hidden signals leap into plain view. His presentation will include live, real-time measurements of realistic intermittent, broadband, narrowband sources such as switching power supplies, PWM motor drives, digital peripherals, as well as Bluetooth and Class D audio amplifiers. Even If you have already heard or read about real-time spectral analysis, this is a great chance to see in person why engineers say “wow, did you see that!” when seeing it for the first time in person.

Lee Hill is Founding Partner of SILENT Solutions LLC, an EMC and RF design firm he established in 1992. Lee and his business partner Randal Vaughn provide EMC troubleshooting services, design reviews, and nationally and internationally. He is a member of adjunct faculty at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) where he teaches graduate-level courses in EMC. Lee also serves as an EMC instructor at University of Oxford (England), and for the IEEE EMC Society’s annual Global University and EMC Fundamentals program. He earned his MSEE in electromagnetics from the Missouri University of Science and Technology EMC Laboratory where he had the privilege of studying under Dr.’s Tom Van Doren, Todd Hubing, and James Drewniak. Lee consults and teaches worldwide, and has presented classes in Taiwan, Singapore, Mexico, Norway, Canada, South Korea, Germany, France, and United Kingdom. Lee is a past member of the IEEE EMC Society’s Board of Directors, and is a named inventor of three US patents for EMI control.
